ARRIEN ANGELES TAROT PDF

In this updated edition of The Tarot Handbook , now with a new introduction by the author, Angeles Arrien takes tarot beyond the limits of the fortune-telling realm and shows us how this time-honored application is both a visual and symbolic map of consciousness, and a source of ancient wisdom. An exciting handbook for either a beginning or an ardent student of the tarot, it contains a multitude of charts, spreads, illustrations of the Thoth Deck, and other methodology tools for anyone looking for insights into personal and spiritual development. An anthropologist who specializes in cross-cultural myths, Arrien demonstrates how the seventy-eight figures of the tarot are portraitures and archetypes that are prevalent in the collective human experience. The author teaches us to use this realization to look beyond our cultural viewpoint or bias when we approach the tarot, and to rely instead on these more important universal principles, thereby deepening the quality and accuracy of our interpretations and expanding our awareness of the human psyche.

Personally I have no issues at all with her ignoring Crowley as the language of symbols is open to personal reinterpretation and there is no single "right reading" of a symbol.

Each person will interpret symbolic imagery differently and that is the entire purpose of using symbolism instead of linear language. Arrien provides some excellent interpretations to the deck, which I honestly find a very welcome addition to the constant rehasing of Crowley's ideas. If you're looking for a wonderful cross-cultural study guide to the Thoth tarot, this is the book for you.

Anthropologist Angeles Arrien is a bit like a Joseph Campbell of the tarot and you will enjoy the richness of the art and the history of these symbols and archetypes. I've been using this book to help me understand the Thoth deck, and I found it very helpful. I still use my own intuition to read the cards, but I find her interpretation helpful.

A lot of issues people go through are initiations, not lessons. Spirit needs no lessons. Arrien focuses on negatives that we need to release or overcome, when negative cards show up. For the major arcana, she she gives advice on affirmations and meditations that can be used for them, plus their gifts and challenges. She also offers several card spreads which I've never seen before.

I have two other Thoth books, and this is the only one I use when needed. Remember to always trust your own judgment and intuition first when reading cards, no matter what any book says. This book was given to me about 20 years ago and I didn't appreciate till now. I actually gave away my initial copy and had to order another one recently.

Since then I have been studying world symbolism and magic amulets quite a bit. I now appreciate the magnitude and power of this book! Angeles Arrien was a profound woman and teacher and her insights are dead on.

As with any esoteric study, you have to study and practice before the meanings become clear. Angeles Arrien's knowledge of symbolism was vast and yet she synthesized this vast knowledge into a crystal clear point of view. With the season dramatically shifting to Spring here, I pulled out my Tarot Handbook again.

I use the Whole Person Spread times a year and I always find something to reflect on. The bulk of this large, relatively thick book is found in the descriptions of the cards. The cards purchased separately are beautiful and have many symbols and ways of looking at them - lots of detail. I'm sure there are other better, truer books for The Tarot but I like Dr.

Arrien's way of incorporating astrology and Jungian archetypes. Perfect for someone who spends a lot of time contemplating how to integrate mind, heart, body, and spirit. My one nit is the section on calculating growth cycles - despite using it every months, I still go backwards and forwards frustratingly a few pages to figure this out. It could be clearer by being better sequenced.

Other than that, I am grateful for Dr. Arrien's compilation and interpretation. I recommend her other books as well, e. In looking for her website today, I was sorry to learn that she died unexpectedly a year ago. Rest in peace, Dr. Arrien, and many thanks. Go to Amazon. Back to top. Get to Know Us.

Tarot by Arrien Angeles

We were both faculty members at the California Institute of Integral Studies. The Reading was so upbeat, so positive and, of course, so right on, that I was moved to take her series of classes in San Francisco in , which included tarot luminary, Mary Greer. Angeles used the Thoth Deck by Crowley, but never referred to his weighty, incomprehensible book at least to me it was. She simply reframed the picture symbols and archetypes in such a way that it was empowering and made sense not occultish or all that esoteric. I learned how to use the power of symbols.
