This text is a truly introductory treatment of the entire field of data compression, including lossless coding, speech coding, and audio coding, which are often neglected in other data compression books. Additionally, the book contains material on M-band quadrature mirror filter banks, the polyphase decomposition, and wavelets beyond what is normally found in any introductory text.
I highly recommend it for adoption. I am very pleased to see his ongoing effort to keep the content timely with the release of the fourth edition this fall. If you want to be well versed in state of the art, ranging from simple lossless coding up to complex video compression, this is the only book I know that will stay with you on every step of the journey.

You can cover a great deal of ground in a limited time and I feel that all the mainstream methods are covered. The book is effectively divided between the first few chapters on lossless compression and a larger number of chapters on lossy compression.
My main issue with it is that the exposition of the maths involved is weak. Key theorems are included and, to be fair, much of the maths is not actually needed to understand the book - my feeling is that one needs it mainly to be able to further develop some of the ideas or to tailor them to one's needs more effectively. There are also some algorithms which are incompletely described you can work out the details on your own, but given how chatty it is elsewhere, consistency would have been good here.
For example, in the floating point version of the arithmetic coding, there are some details missing. On balance, though, this is an important book for those who would like an overview of the subject and all-in-all well-written!
