Warrior, rain-god, and spirit of the maize, Quetzalcoatl—the most familiar of the Mesoamerican gods— is better known for his attributes than for his complex history. Known to the Zapotecs, Olmecs, Toltecs, Mayans, Aztecs, and others, and at times the shared hero of warring peoples, Quetzalcoatl transcends both cultural and chronological barriers.

His very name links the ea Warrior, rain-god, and spirit of the maize, Quetzalcoatl—the most familiar of the Mesoamerican gods— is better known for his attributes than for his complex history. His very name links the earth coatl, or serpent with the sky quetzalli, or precious green feathers. In this comprehensive study, Enrique Florescano traces the spread of the worship of the Plumed Serpent, and the multiplicity of interpretations that surround the god, by comparing the Palenque inscriptions ca.

He also consults and reproduces archeological evidence from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Nicaragua, demonstrating how the myth of Quetzalcoatl extends throughout Mesoamerica. Chapter topics include the diverse manifestations of Quetzalcoatl, the god as civilizing hero, interpretations of his role in creation stories and other myths, and a comparative study of Quetzalcoatl as one of the offspring of the Mother Goddess similar to divinities such as Dumuzi, Tammuz, Osiris, Adonis, and Persephone, from other classical cultures.

Sort order. Start your review of The Myth of Quetzalcoatl. Aug 14, Timothy Boyd rated it it was ok. This book was not quite what I wanted. The writer goes through a long involved history of what is know of the myth and history of the Mesoamerican god then describes his interpretation of this. I don't see how he develops a new concept other than it is just his opinion, no new facts to back him up. Overall not what I was looking for. Not recommended.

Sep 02, Flick rated it really liked it. A really interesting look at central American mythology and how the beliefs changed over time. Great discussion about the roles the sun, Venus, the underworld, and corn play in the mythology. My god, so much corn. Also really appreciated the comparative study of gods in other religions who play similar roles.

Jun 13, Mitchell26 McLaughlin rated it really liked it. One of the very few good scholarly looks at a major figure and time in history. It is also easily and inherently comparable to Hermetic work. A must read for all concerned. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. About Enrique Florescano. Enrique Florescano. Books by Enrique Florescano.
